  • Is the living environment adapted for people living with dementia?

Our purpose built Glentor Centre is specially built for those living with dementia. Specialists were consulted on the more appropriate colour themes to use on the flooring, walls, fixtures and fittings.

Our more recently converted unit, the Belltor has more traditional character as part of a period property, although we are working hard to make this space as suitable for those living with dementia as possible.

  • Does the home use specialist equipment, technology and innovative systems?

There are several systems in place that help to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents. Both the Glentor Centre and the Belltor Unit are locked units, which means all visitors need to be signed in and out. This helps keep those residents safe that may like to wander and ensures that all visitors to the units are approved to be there.

We also use digital care records systems and you may see staff using either hand held devices or computers and laptops to record the details of your loved ones care.

There is also other equipment that you may see around the homes such as call bells, room & bed alarms or hoisting apparatus.

  • Is the importance of the mealtime experience understood?

Meal times along with food and drink intake is really important for dementia sufferers so we ask visitors do not visit during meal times or wait in another room whilst residents eat. This is to protect their privacy and ensure our carers have the time they need to help the residents get the most from their meals.

There are times when we have communal events and we all eat together such as special events throughout the year. We can also provide food at request for visiting families if you would like to eat alongside your loved one.

  • Does the home have skilled staff with relevant training?

Most of our staff have completed an NVQ in care, starting at level 2 but many have higher qualifications beyond this. All staff complete mandatory training which is applicable to their job role and department.

This training is topped up yearly with other training added as needed if residents needs change.

  • Can we bring in furniture from home/our loved one’s home?

We encourage families to bring in items that can help make the bedrooms more personalised for the resident. This could be small side tables or units, pictures or personal items.

  • When can I visit my loved one?

We have a very open door policy at Torr Home and welcome visitors at all times although we may ask you to wait in another room during protected meal times to ensure the privacy of all of our residents.

Our Receptionist works normal office hours Monday to Friday but there are always staff on hand to welcome you.

  • Who can I talk to if I have questions or concerns about my loved one’s care?

If you have questions in the day to day care of your loved one, please speak to the carers that will be on shift and there is also a registered Nurse or Matrons available to speak with should you wish.

  • I still have more questions, what can I do?

You can either call our main Reception who can help with your enquiry or put you through to an appropriate manager or email info@torrhome.org.uk

  • Are you regulated?

We are regulated by the CQC, the Care Quality Commission and our most recent report can be seen here.

I am writing to say a huge thank you to you all for the care and kindness you gave to my beloved dad during his stay at the Glentor Centre. I got to know so many of you, as Glentor was such a big part of my life too for over three years. I have so many happy memories to cherish, and I am so pleased to have made new friends.
